Collagen is made by fibroblasts sitting deep in the dermis, well under the layer any cream can reach. Feed them and they build. Starve them and no serum on the shelf compensates.
Lab work on royal jelly points at 10-HDA as the active piece: in human skin fibroblasts it was associated with increased procollagen type I, the raw material of firm skin. That's the layer a spoonful reaches and a cream doesn't.
